How many times have you set a goal and started off strong only to find yourself losing interest a few weeks or at best a few months later? Why does this happen? How are some people able to stay on track and achieve their goals? There are two primary reasons: Motivation and Self-Discipline. Let’s start by focusing on Motivation.
Forms of Motivation
There are two forms of Motivation: Extrinsic and Intrinsic. Extrinsic Motivation is the type of motivation that comes from External forces, our environment. Intrinsic Motivation is the type of motivation that comes from Internal forces, our inner thoughts, and desires. Both forms of motivation can be positive or negative.
Extrinsic Motivation is usually the most attractive form. These types of motivators serve an important role as they are often the catalyst for action and help a person build momentum in pursuing their dreams. As time passes, the allure of some extrinsic motivators fade and while they may continue to fuel action, the intensity of action lessens. This is when a person would begin to compromise and rationalize their decision to slow down or abandon their plan.
It is at this point where Intrinsic Motivation operates best. While this form of motivation can be a catalyst for action, it is arguably the most enduring and sustainable. If all extrinsic motivators were removed, a person would have no reason to continue the pursuit of a dream unless it was tied to something greater within.
Examine Your Motivators
When creating an action plan, it is important to take time to list out what your motivators are. Knowing what drives you will help you design your environment for optimal performance. You can place cues, reminders, and people around you that will represent your motivators. You will also be able to choose activities that help to encourage you and push you farther. During this time, consider your deeper reasons for pursuing your dream. If there were no praises or rewards to be gained, Why would you pursue this dream? What would you gain internally if you were to achieve it?
The coaching experience in itself is a form of positive extrinsic motivation. We are here to support you, encourage you and hold you accountable. However, our ultimate goal is to help you tie your plans to positive intrinsic motivators so that you will endure the journey of bringing your dream to reality.
Let us help motivate you throughout your journey!
